Capcom Pro Tour 2017 Returns With Bigger Prizes And Streamlined Format

Capcom just announced the new and improved Capcom Pro Tour 2017- the main tournament circuit for Street Fighter V. This year we will see a much more streamlined format to follow along, leaving less talk about how anyone will get to qualify to Capcom Cup at the end of the year and focus on more hype matches.

The main event, Capcom Cup, will now have an even bigger prize pool out of the gate: $600,000. The format is said to have a few more improvements- the gruelling best of five tournament for every match in the 32 player bracket turned out to not be the best experience for most players, but that will be announced in the future.

The breakdown for the 32 spots in Capcom Cup is much more simpler now. One goes to last year’s champion NuckleDu, one is reserved for the Capcom Last Chance Qualifier- an open qualifier, with 30 spots up for grabs for the top 30 in the global leaderboards. No auto-qualifications from premier events this time.

Points distribution for Premier and Ranking events have been revised. A win in a Premier Event should give a huge boost in points that should effectively give the winner a similar advantage like last year’s auto-qualify was designed for. EVO, the premier fighting games tournament, remains as a whole other tier, as illustrated here:

The focus this time is to bring out the best players from each region. Regional Finals will be locked to players for the particular region only, and qualifications to the 8-man finals will be based on standings on the regional leaderboard. Top 7 players will get a spot plus 1 for the Last Chance Qualifier. $30,000 USD is the prize pool for the Regional Finals top 8, with the winner grabbing 400 points. Regional Finals winner is the only auto-qualify spot. In theory, the 400 points boost should put them up high in the global leaderboard, but in the rare case that it does not, one spot from the Top 30 global leaderboard will be removed to make way for the Regional Finals winner.

Online Ranking events return, with no registration caps and four events per region compared to last year’s two.

Here’s the list of events that will be part of this year’s Capcom Pro Tour:
