The state government endorsed Selangor Cyber Games was a huge success last year. Successful enough for the event to return for the second time around. 2017 will see a bit of a shake up- only four games this time and as a result, a smaller total prize pool of RM180,000.
However, the bulk of the total RM330,000 offered last year was part of the Mineski Pro Gaming League (MPGL) South East Asia Championship which was roughly RM200,000. MPGL isn’t returning this time, and with less tournaments offered, the prize pool per game is bigger than last year.

As EVO 2017 comes to a close with a slew of spectacular final matches, all eyes are now on the now confirmed EVO Japan. The event should be similar in format to EVO but at a different location (Tokyo, Japan) so expect to see more Japanese players participating.
There are seven main game tournaments. Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, King Of Fighters XIV and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U are in, but not Smash Melee. Nintendo’s latest fighter for the Switch, ARMS, will make its first appearance as an EVO main tournament. Rounding it off are the two anime fighters also featured at EVO this year: Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 and BlazBlue: Central Fiction.

The free-to-play version of EA’s ubiquitous football game, FIFA Online 3, isn’t just all fun and games. There is a strong competitive scene surrounding it. There are also official esports tournaments, with the biggest one being the EA Champions Cup that is scheduled to be held from July 21 to 23 in Guangzhou, China.
12 teams will compete at the EA Champions Cup with up to $330,000 USD worth of prize pool up for grabs. Blizzard has finally broke the silence on what are the teams that will be taking part in the first season of Overwatch League, their ambitious take on a top flight esports league that operates more similar to a traditional sports league. This first announcement reveals seven teams, calling seven different cities across the world as their home ground.

The Overwatch League is having a bit of a rocky start. The initial pitch of a franchised league run by Blizzard themselves with promise of better pay for players and better compensation for teams participating sounds good, if not slightly ambitious. Not much news about the League is available officially, uncertainty floats in the air which had made various teams that rushed to secure an Overwatch roster to let them go again.
Following up from the reports of a high asking value of $20 million for a spot in the Overwatch League, ESPN Esports has reported that at least six teams are now confirmed.

The interesting thing about Dota 2 esports is of course the huge prize pool offered in its premier event The International. It continues to grow in number year after year (this year’s count is already more than $20 million USD at the time of writing- that’s about as much last year’s total).
