Fisticuffs! Many games have been exploring the slow, deliberate style of combat, like Devolver’s Absolver. And it looks like Nintendo is jumping in as well. Utilising the Nintendo Switch’s controllers (the Joy-Con) which have motion controls, prepare to use your arms a lot in the aptly named ARMS.
It’s a fighting game with a fantasy twist- all the characters’ arm looked to be coming out of spring toy and you can land long-range punches before engaging closer with combos. Blocks, jabs and hooks are all done by doing the motions yourselves with the pair of Joy-Cons halves on each arm.
It also has 2-player split-screen and you can connect to another [...]
3D platforming is back in style! Yooka-Laylee isn’t the only one to release this year as Nintendo’s lovable plumber is back with a full 3D outing since Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii.
This time Mario embarks on an odyssey across multiple dimensions (including a level with regular humans- please don’t do what Sonic ’06 did) to save Princess Peach, again. But this time the stakes are higher, as main baddie Bowser isn’t just kidnapping Peach, he’s about to marry her.
Of course, Mario games has never been the story, it’s about slick controls, fun platforming and its whimsical style and polish. Check out the first trailer [...]
Some describe this indie game as a fighting game. But a close look at the gameplay, it has a bit of the Dark Souls-esque 3rd person combat to it. But then developers Slocap Studios describe their debut game as an “Online Combat RPG”. Whatever it is, Absolver is an interesting looking game. Its art style certainly pops and its combat looks fluid. If you’re looking for some fisticuffs action without diving into fighting games, this should be on your radar.
The premise here is your character awoken to learn he or she is a Prospector, and from there will wander around to prove to be worthy enough to be part of the Absolvers. You will face other Prospectors along [...]
Need another racing game on PC to look forward to? Grip is an indie racing game with this futuristic setting where the cars you race in are double-sided. This means you can stick to ceilings when in high speeds and just fall to the ground without needing to do a 180 degree rotation. It’s a callback to an old classic racing game named Rollcage that had this similar concept, which developers Caged Element is intended to make Grip its spiritual successor.
In practice, Grip looks astonishing well for an Early Access game. There’s plenty of exotic locations to race on, mostly on desolate planets with cool tunnels to make use of the double-sided cars. Weapons are also [...]
If you ever thought of a game with survival elements but with less combat and more crafting and terraforming, then you might be interested in Astroneer. In this game, you and up to three other online friends get to explore beautiful planets while gathering resources to build up a base. It seems a lot like Minecraft with its focus on crafting (there’s a lot of items to be unlocked by research) and survival elements (you could die of suffocation or other elemental hazards). But it is all wrapped up in a very sweet and nice looking aesthetic.
And it’s enough features being featured in Astroneer in its current form to differentiate it from other survival games. A very [...]
Nier is a cult hit action RPG released back in 2005. It had a long of good thing going with its combination of 3D and 2D platforming, interesting setting of a post-apocalyptic world, and character action combat mixed with some bullet-hell shooting. The only problem? It’s not a refined experience, plenty of clunkiness and unevenness of the gameplay rests the game as a cult hit. But Square Enix is taking another chance with the series by taking a few of the key personnel from Nier such as game designer Yoko Taro and pair them up with a studio known for making good action games: PlatinumGames.
Like how Nier is an spin-off from one of the many endings from the series [...]
