What happened when a games sucks so much that even patches and updates couldn’t save it? Make a new one? As crazy as it sounds, that was the decision Square Enix took once they found out their MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV was going to be terrible at launch.
The period during the launch of Final Fantasy XIII, which received lukewarm reception despite the team invested for so long in a whole new engine, and the disastrous launch of Final Fantasy XIV was a rough point for the Japanese company. Then CEO Yoichi Wada stepped down during this period, and the company predicted an extraordinary loss of 10 billion yen in 2013 due to various restructures to keep it afloat.
Cross-play, as in playing games together with players on other platforms, are now a major talk thanks to the very public support of the initiative seen in the announcement of cross-play for Minecraft and Rocket League at E3 this year. But there is one company that have done this years ago and it’s Square Enix.
Final Fantasy XI was one of the first games to support cross-platform play (it holds the Guinness World Record as the “First Cross-Platform Online RPG) and their latest MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV continues that tradition with cross-play with PC, PS4 and PS3 (though as the release of the new Stormblood expansion, the PS3 version is no longer [...]
Final Fantasy XV’s next story DLC, Episode Prompto is coming out real soon. Next week, to be accurate. This is the third piece of content tied to the Season Pass and will let you play as the wise-cracking gunslinger Prompto as he embarks on a personal journey.
Episode Prompto will fill in the gap when he ‘left’ the party during the train ride sequence leading to the end of the game. The way he left was one emotionally charged scene, if you were able to notice the subtle storytelling, which sets up a harrowing journey for our otherwise cheery party member.
As for gameplay, expect to see Prompto shooting many people with guns either with a third-person [...]
Dissidia Final Fantasy is an interesting little series that started from the PSP. Imagine all the heroes and villains from each mainline Final Fantasy entry brawl it out like a mix of fighting game and action-RPG mechanics. Two years ago the series made the jump into the arcade, rebooting the series with a focus on more battle mechanics than RPG mechanics.
Now PS4 players will get a taste of it with a home release. Dissidia Final Fantasy NT will be coming out in early 2018. The game is being helmed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja (of Nioh and Dead Or Alive fame).
Check out the first trailer here:
According to Gematsu, the NT stands for “New Tale,” “New Trial,” [...]
Final Fantasy XV continues to be worked on. The latest update to land for this month is a mostly a minor one, an addition of one new recipe: “stinky tofu” (thank the survey answers from players of Taiwan for this), leaderboards for the Timed Quests, a new snapshot winner added into the game and various bug fixes. Additionally, a new outfit for Noctis will appear seperately on the Playstaion Store on May 30, pictured above.
The most peculiar of additions in the update however is a survey located in the Special section of the main menu. It simply asks you what sort of future content you are looking forward to, with high votes to be considered for future [...]
The upcoming remaster of the greatly underrated Final Fantasy XII is on track for its July release. It will be the first time for players outside Japan to try out the new job systems introduced in Final Fantasy XII International. The change to specific jobs for each character is a response to the ill-received License Board character progression that was way too open-ended resulting in players easily make not optimal character builds. The job system enables each character to have specific License Boards that is optimise for a specific character build, but also closes opportunities for hybrid builds.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will add one more neat trick to job system by [...]
