Today at Sunway University, Garena Malaysia officially announced their latest initiative to help growing collegiate level esports in Malaysia. The Garena Student Alliance (GSA) is a platform where various esports clubs in Malaysia’s universities and colleges can get help to grow their club further and helps growing more talented in esports.
“Esports has triggered a major surge across the world and few could have envisioned that education and competitive gaming could co-exist as they do today,” said Justin Lye, Product Manager at Garena Malaysia.

Riot Games, the developers behind the MOBA League Of Legends, has announced a new program that will benefit college students in Malaysia. The Riot Student Ambassador program is the first of its kind here in Malaysia, where selected students under this program will undergo a one-year program that “aims to help participants develop transferable career critical skills and jump-start their future careers, regardless of their chosen discipline.”
The first batch of students for the Riot Student Ambassador has been selected- 28 students from 28 different universities and colleges around the country. A minimum of CGPA 3.5 were required to apply for the program.
Fire Dragoon is a local e-sports team that has making names here in Malaysia. Their Dota 2 team managed to reached 6th for the Boston Major SEA Qualifiers and finished third in last year’s UMobile GameOnz MSI MGA Dota 2 Tournament. Their League Of Legends squad is now in the top 4 in the Malaysia’s equivalent to the LCS- The Legends Circuit hosted by Garena. They also once had one of the strongest CS:GO roster in Malaysia.

It’s not just former NBA stars that are making a venture in e-sports. Two-time World Cup champion Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima, mostly known as Ronaldo, has now purchased a stake in a Brazilian League Of Legends (LoL) e-sports team, CNB.
The investment was not on his own alone, as he teamed up with two individuals, poker pro André Akkari Igor Trafane Federal, CEO of the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP). The trio now owns 50% of CNB, with the remaining 50% still owned by club founders Cleber “Fuzi” Fonseca and Carlos “Fury” Júnior.

Lenovo is breaking grounds with today’s announcement at the Lenovo Game On event at Plaza Low Yat today. Lenovo will now start sponsoring e-sports events around Southeast Asia. Seeing the dramatic growth of the gaming market in Asia-Pacific, especially in Malaysia, Lenovo is betting on investing into the gaming market via e-sports sponsorships.

The hype for this weekend’s Selangor Cyber Games is slowly rising. Garena just announced that the upcoming League Of Legends tournament, one of the 7 games being played at Selangor Cyber Games this weekend, will have an interesting twist as it will be hosted by local celebrity Nabil Ahmad. Otherwise known as Nabil Raja Lawak, this is the comedian’s first forray on hosting an e-sports event, though he has been around with as hosts on TV shows for a while now.
